{"id":3438,"date":"2013-10-30T14:50:59","date_gmt":"2013-10-30T21:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/?p=3438"},"modified":"2013-10-30T15:01:37","modified_gmt":"2013-10-30T22:01:37","slug":"lulac-names-new-chair-for-civil-rights-and-legal-redress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/lulac-names-new-chair-for-civil-rights-and-legal-redress\/","title":{"rendered":"LULAC Names New Chair for Civil Rights and Legal Redress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The League Of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Chooses Chair for Civil Rights\/ Legal Redress Committee<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eugene, OR (<strong>October 21, 2013)<\/strong>\u2014<\/strong>At its October council meeting, the League Of United Latin American Citizens<em> (<\/em>LULAC) of Lane County installed a new officer, Silverio Anthony Mogart, as its Civil Rights and Legal Redress Chair, thus ushering in a complementary era of civil rights in Lane County.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding upon the foundation of what others have laid so the next generations can continue to work on the legacy is what LULAC\u2019s Civil Rights Committee believes,\u201d said LULAC council president Juan Carlos Valle. \u201cIn its simplest terms, the basic program of LULAC is to fight discrimination based on race, ethnicity, or national origin. The approach will be of both collaboration, and awareness to address issues of discrimination and marginalization against the population the council serves,\u201d he said.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLULAC has long been committed to justice. From the foundations of Brown v. Board of Education to today\u2019s immigration work, LULAC has been at the forefront of social justice and civil rights actions. I am honored to head up this committee. It is our sincere hope and desire to make our community a safer place through this work,&#8221; said \u00a0Silverio A Mogart, the newly installed chair for the Civil Rights and Legal Redress Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The organization&#8217;s priority is, and will always be, education discrimination and civil rights violations. Employment is a close second followed by voting rights, administration of justice, housing, immigration, and lending practices as they offer unique challenges and opportunities for LULAC to engage in
