Ismael Moreno Coto, SJ and Lucy Edwards<\/p>\n<p>Honduran Jesuit priest Ismael Moreno Coto, known as Padre Melo, has been on\u00a0the receiving end of death threats and intimidation in a country that is the\u00a0murder capital of the world and at the center of the U.S. government&#8217;s war\u00a0on drugs. He is director of Radio Progreso, a radio network that covers\u00a0northern Honduras. Thirty journalists have been among the hundreds of\u00a0assassinated in Honduras since the 2009 coup d&#8217;\u00e9tat, yet Honduras is\u00a0virtually invisible to U.S. citizens.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Ashland resident Lucy Edwards has been doing human rights accompaniment in\u00a0Honduras since 2010. One of the people she has accompanied in Honduras is\u00a0Padre Melo.\u00a0Padre Melo and Lucy Edwards will speak in Eugene on Tuesday, April 2, at 7\u00a0pm at the Eugene Friends Meeting House, 2274 Onyx St. The event is free and\u00a0open to the public. Donations welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Rev. Ismael Moreno Coto, SJ is from El Progreso, Honduras. He is director of\u00a0Radio Progreso and a Jesuit research and social action center known by its\u00a0acronym ERIC. He is from the Central American Province of Jesuits and worked\u00a0in El Salvador after his colleagues and friends (six priests, their\u00a0housekeeper and her daughter) were murdered at the Jesuit residence on the\u00a0campus of the University of Central America (UCA), San Salvador.\u00a0The murders were committed by U.S.-trained Salvadoran soldiers on November\u00a016, 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy Edwards is an international human rights volunteer with PROAH, the\u00a0Honduras Accompaniment Project.
