Since a history of violence and bloodshed has plagued the Oaxacan town of San Juan Copala from colonial times to the present, it is important to ask how endemic violence in rural, indigenous communities in Mexico is to be understood.<!--more--> An unearthing of the archival material on the agrarian history of San Jan Copala demonstrates that the history of this town is not simply written
