{"id":16380,"date":"2026-05-22T13:21:57","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T20:21:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/?p=16380"},"modified":"2026-05-22T13:22:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T20:22:15","slug":"new-cllas-funded-research-explores-edgars-fashion-and-latino-youth-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/new-cllas-funded-research-explores-edgars-fashion-and-latino-youth-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"CLLAS Graduate Research to Explore Edgars, Fashion, and Latino Youth Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"148\" data-end=\"349\">The Center for Latino\/a and Latin American Studies is pleased to support Mariana Rivera Ramirez, a PhD candidate in Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies, through the 2026 CLLAS Graduate Research Grant.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"351\" data-end=\"801\">Rivera Ramirez\u2019s project, \u201cA New Kind of Gangster: Edgars, Hip-Hop Fashion, and the Hyper-criminalization of Latino Boys,\u201d examines how fashion, style, and performance shape public perceptions of Latino boys in the United States. Their research focuses on Black and Latina\/o aesthetic performances, self-fashioning, and forms of resistance, with attention to Texas, the U.S. South, and the broader United States.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"1166\">This project is part of Rivera Ramirez\u2019s larger dissertation, \u201cResisting Respectability: Black and Latina\/o Performances in the New Millennium,\u201d which explores how Latinx participation in hip-hop culture raises questions about cultural authenticity, appropriation, gendered racial stereotypes, and resistance to assimilation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1467\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">With CLLAS support, Rivera Ramirez will continue developing a dissertation chapter on the Edgar haircut and hip-hop aesthetics. Their work offers important insight into how Latino youth use style and cultural expression while also navigating racialized assumptions, stereotypes, and
