The event featured faculty members Dr. Adriana Miramontes Olivas, Dr. Gabriela Mart\u00ednez, and Dr. Lynn Stephen, who shared their insights into the catalogue\u2019s content. Key Takeaways from the Presentations:<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"914\">Documenting Communities in Motion<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"915\" data-end=\"1192\">Dr. Stephen opened with reflections on her decades of scholarship in <strong data-start=\"984\" data-end=\"1098\">immigration and asylum, gender violence, transborder Latinx communities, and Mesoamerican Indigenous diasporas<\/strong> across Mexico, Guatemala, California, and the U.S. Northwest. Her current projects include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1403\">\n<li data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1252\">\n<p data-start=\"1196\" data-end=\"1252\"><strong data-start=\"1196\" data-end=\"1250\">Access to justice for survivors of gender violence<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1253\" data-end=\"1319\">\n<p data-start=\"1255\" data-end=\"1319\"><strong data-start=\"1255\" data-end=\"1317\">The impact of COVID-19 on farmworker health and well-being<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1320\" data-end=\"1403\">\n<p data-start=\"1322\" data-end=\"1403\"><strong data-start=\"1322\" data-end=\"1383\">Mapping Mesoamerican Indigenous languages and communities<\/strong> in U.S. diasporas<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1798\">As Stephen explained, her commitment is to research that reaches beyond academia: <em data-start=\"1487\" data-end=\"1583\">\u201cI have a strong commitment to projects that produce findings accessible to the wider public,\u201d<\/em> she said, noting that her work includes films, websites, and scholarly publications. She also serves as an <strong data-start=\"1691\" data-end=\"1750\">expert witness in immigration and gendered asylum cases<\/strong>, translating scholarship into legal advocacy.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1800\" data-end=\"1837\">Curating Borderlands and Memory<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1838\" data-end=\"2088\">Next, Dr. Miramontes Olivas presented her work at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. Her research and curatorial practice focus on <strong data-start=\"1970\" data-end=\"2085\">contemporary art from the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, feminist visual culture, and the disappeared in the Americas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2480\"><em data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2148\">\u201cArt can evoke the disappeared in ways archives cannot,\u201d<\/em> she noted, underscoring how visual culture becomes a site of resistance and remembrance. Her publications span peer-reviewed journals, including <strong data-start=\"2294\" data-end=\"2311\">UO\u2019s <em>Periph\u0113rica<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>Chamisa: University of New Mexico\u2019s Journal of Literary Performance and Visual Arts<\/strong>, and collections on Latin American visual culture at the University of California.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2482\" data-end=\"2518\">Archives, Media, and Testimony<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2519\" data-end=\"2873\">Dr. Mart\u00ednez closed the panel by highlighting the role of <strong data-start=\"2577\" data-end=\"2604\">media and archival work<\/strong> in amplifying stories of displacement, survival, and cultural resilience. An <strong data-start=\"2682\" data-end=\"2721\">award-winning documentary filmmaker<\/strong>, Mart\u00ednez has produced and directed more than 15 films on Indigenous cultures, social movements, human rights, and gender issues across the Americas.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2875\" data-end=\"3173\"><em data-start=\"2875\" data-end=\"2976\">\u201cMy work aims at influencing cultural understanding, policy challenges, and social transformation,\u201d<\/em> she explained. Her remarks emphasized how collaborative archives and films allow communities to narrate their own histories, challenging dominant narratives and reframing whose voices are heard.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3175\" data-end=\"3194\">Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3195\" data-end=\"3523\">The conversation underscored CLLAS\u2019s mission to bridge scholarship and community. Her educational background includes, BA in Art from the University of Texas at El Paso, MA in Art History from the University of Texas at San Antonio, and a PhD in Art History at the University of Pittsburgh. Within her role as a curator at JSMA, she works on creating an engaging Latinx community on and off campus. Her documentary work spans over 12 films, including &#8220;\u00d1akaj,&#8221; &#8220;Mamacoca,&#8221; and &#8220;Keep Your Eyes On Guatemala.&#8221; Mart\u00ednez&#8217;s research focuses on media ownership, culture, and trans-nationalism, with a particular emphasis on Latin America. She is a professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon and affiliated faculty with several programs, including Latin American Studies and Cinema Studies. Her current research focuses on indigenous women&#8217;s access to gendered justice in Guatemala and the US. Stephen is also a dedicated educator and has served in various leadership roles, including as President of the Latin American Studies
