From the moment you come to this world, you are in constant motion. On this trip, you never know where you will be taken, but there is always a place of origin from which you construct an identity and you keep adding new identities as you move through<\/span><\/i>\u2028<\/span><\/i>life. At the core, there is the matrix of those that gave you birth and the family and community values that you carry wherever you roam. <\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

Selene and Roberto were born in different cities in the south of Chile, where it rains as much or more than in Oregon. Selene was born in 1968, in Valdivia, a city where the Wuilliche, German, and Chilean cultures coexist. Roberto was born in 1959 in Temuco, a city marked by having the largest presence in Chile of the indigenous Mapuche culture and people. Today there are also Chileans and descendants of European colonizers. Both have lived in a permanent Diaspora, each for their own reasons. Sometimes they chose this, and sometimes it was forced upon them. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Selene lived through the experience of the military coup of September 11, 1973 when she was only 5 years old. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

In 1976 she and her brother left on a voyage with their mother Nancy, a Spanish teacher, and their father Alfonso, the captain of a fishing boat. They sailed for 23 days to reach Mexico, where they sought asylum from the violence that took over their country. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Because of this, Selene and her family were listed by the Chilean government as people forbidden from entering Chile for over 15 years. At the age of 7, she was officially labeled a terrorist. From 1976 to 1982, the family lived in different places in Mexico, including Acapulco, Mexico City, Guanajuato, and Mexicali. While in Mexico, the boat was lost, and so was the family after a divorce. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Selene and her brother ended up living with their father and in 1982 they came to the US. They arrived in Chula Vista, California and Selene attended high school and started to work with her father selling pottery. She also worked at Sea World, taking Polaroids of children posing with a person wearing a whale costume. In 1991, Selene transferred to the University of California at Berkeley. In 1992 she spent a year abroad living in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil. In 1994 she returned to UC Berkeley to earn a master\u2019s degree and worked for a recycling program in the city of Oakland. She lived in Berkeley until 1998. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Today Selene and her brother are US citizens. Their father died a few years ago and their mother returned to Valdivia.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Roberto\u2019s family also was very affected by the dictatorship in Chile (1973-1990). Many of his relatives suffered the consequences of this brutal period. His uncle Anselmo Raguileo, an important Mapuche leader, was savagely tortured in the main concentration camp at the National Stadium of Chile, and many other relatives and friends suffered torture, were exiled, or came to the uncertain end of becoming \u201cdisappeared\u201d at the hands of the police or the military. A cousin was detained, tortured and disappeared in Argentina. His father lost his job because he refused to collaborate with the dictatorship. In junior high school, Roberto attended an industrialtechnical school full of the children of workers, Mapuches and other kids that were also the children of a public employee like Roberto. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

In 1977 Roberto started to work for a resistance organization. He was 17 years old and this coincided with his first year in college, where he studied music pedagogy. These were the clandestine years and also the years of hunger and metaphors. Roberto learned to forget his name and to forget the faces of his friends. Showing affection to friends was a careless action that could lead to death. During these times, to do art, poetry, or sing songs became subversive acts and Roberto joined different cultural movements and bands. As a musician he was a member of \u201cSchwenke y Nilo\u201d, a relevant group in Chile\u2019s New Song movement. As an artist he held numerous individual and collective expositions and conferences about his art in Chile, Ecuador, England, Croatia, Germany Selene (left) and her siblings. He developed an extensive body of work on the subject of human rights most recently under the title \u201cAmor Contra el Olvido (Love Against Forgetting)\u201d. As a human being, Roberto has spent most of his life since he was 13 working as a human rights activist and investigator. This included the search for hundreds of disappeared detainees. He participated as a consultant in a forensic anthropology team in five exhumations of the remains of people who were massacred during the military dictatorship. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Selene and Roberto met in Chile in 1997, when she was visiting her family. They saw their own face reflected in the other, and joined paths. Roberto left Chile and came to the United States following his heart. They first lived in Salinas, California, where Selene worked with small farmer immigrants who came from diverse places in Mexico, first in an organic agriculture program and then in a health research project. In 2003 Selene and Roberto moved to Eugene for Roberto to start a graduate program at the University of Oregon, in Romance Languages. Today, he is a PhD candidate and also a Graduate Teaching Fellow teaching Spanish Language and literature. Selene found work with Lane County, and works there today in the Public Health Department. Selene and Roberto have children and grandchildren in Chile, and in Eugene they share their home with Nico, their spoiled four-legged \u201ccanine child.\u201d <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

They are both proud and happy to be citizens of Lane County, a welcoming place of rest and respite from all their previous trials and travels .<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Desde que naces est\u00e1s en movimiento, un viaje en el que nunca sabes donde iras a parar. Sin embargo, siempre hay un lugar de origen desde donde se construye una identidad que va sumando nuevas identidades que nunca acaban y en las que se mantiene aquella matriz de los que te dieron la vida y los valores familiares y comunitarios que ellos te regalaron.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Ambos nacieron en ciudades diferentes,<\/span>\u2028<\/span>en el sur de Chile, donde llueve tanto o m\u00e1s que en Oreg\u00f3n. Selene naci\u00f3 en el<\/span>\u2028<\/span>a\u00f1o 1968, en Valdivia, una ciudad donde coexisten las culturas Wuilliche, chilena, y alemana. Roberto naci\u00f3 en el a\u00f1o 1959, en Temuco, una ciudad marcada por la mayor presencia del pueblo y la cultura ind\u00edgena mapuche. Hoy, el territorio es ocupado<\/span>\u2028<\/span>por chilenos y descendientes de colonos europeos e ind\u00edgenas mapuche. Ambos por diferentes circunstancias de la vida han vivido en una di\u00e1spora permanente, a veces escogida, a veces obligada. Selene ten\u00eda 5 a\u00f1os cuando vivi\u00f3 la experiencia del golpe militar del 11 de septiembre de 1973 en Chile. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

En 1976 la familia decidi\u00f3 irse del pa\u00eds para dejar atr\u00e1s ese ambiente de represi\u00f3n y violencia. Selene y su hermano junto con Nancy su madre, que era profesora de castellano, y Alfonso, su padre, que tenia un barco pesquero, se embarcaron en un viaje por mar que dur\u00f3 23 d\u00edas y que los llev\u00f3 hasta M\u00e9xico, donde pidieron asilo pol\u00edtico. Por este acto, el gobierno de Chile de la \u00e9poca les prohibi\u00f3 la entrada a Chile, y as\u00ed fue que a la edad de 7 a\u00f1os Selene fue catalogada de terrorista. Desde 1976 hasta 1982 la familia vivi\u00f3 en diferentes ciudades de M\u00e9xico, incluyendo Acapulco, Ciudad de M\u00e9xico, Guanajuato y Mexicali. Durante este per\u00edodo el barco se perdi\u00f3 y la familia se deshizo con el divorcio de los padres. Selene y su hermano terminaron viviendo con su padre, quien los trajo a Estados Unidos en 1982. Llegaron a Chula Vista, California donde Selene curso la Escuela Secundaria mientras trabajaba con su padre en el negocio de venta de alfarer\u00eda mexicana. Al mismo tiempo apoy\u00f3 a la familia con su trabajo en el parque Sea World, donde tomaba fotos de ni\u00f1os en los brazos de la ballena Shamu, que era un colega vestido con un traje de peluche. En 1991 Selene se fue a estudiar a la Universidad de California en Berkeley. En 1992 se fue por un a\u00f1o de intercambio a S\u00e3o Paulo, Brasil y regres\u00f3 a Berkeley a hacer una maestr\u00eda en 1994. En esa \u00e9poca, tambi\u00e9n trabajaba mientras estudiaba en un programa de reciclaje en la ciudad de Oakland. <\/span>Hasta 1998 vivi\u00f3 en Berkeley. <\/span>Hoy en d\u00eda Selene y su hermano son ciudadanos norteamericanos. Su padre muri\u00f3 hace algunos a\u00f1os y su madre regres\u00f3 a Valdivia. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

La familia de Roberto tambi\u00e9n fue muy afectada por la dictadura en Chile (1973-1990)<\/span> <\/span>Muchos de sus parientes sufrieron las consecuencias de este periodo brutal. Su t\u00edo Anselmo<\/span> <\/span>Raguileo, un importante l\u00edder Mapuche, fue salvajemente torturado en el principal campo<\/span> <\/span>de concentraci\u00f3n del pa\u00eds en el Estadio Nacional. Muchos otros amigos y parientes tambi\u00e9n<\/span> <\/span>sufrieron tortura, fueron exiliados o llegaron a un incierto fin como detenidos desaparecidos<\/span> <\/span>por los militares o la polic\u00eda. Una prima fue detenida en Argentina y all\u00ed desapareci\u00f3. El padre<\/span> <\/span>de Roberto perdi\u00f3 su empleo en esta \u00e9poca por que se neg\u00f3 a colaborar con la dictadura.<\/span> <\/span>Durante su \u00e9poca escolar, Roberto estuvo en escuelas t\u00e9cnico-industriales, rodeado de otros<\/span> <\/span>que como \u00e9l eran hijos de empleados p\u00fablicos, trabajadores y de ind\u00edgenas Mapuches.<\/span> <\/span>En 1977 Roberto comenz\u00f3 a trabajar para organizaciones de protesta y resistencia. Ten\u00eda 17 a\u00f1os y comenzaba su primer a\u00f1o en la universidad, donde estudiar\u00eda pedagog\u00eda en m\u00fasica.<\/span> <\/span>Estos fueron a\u00f1os clandestinos, los a\u00f1os del hambre y las met\u00e1foras. Roberto aprendi\u00f3 a<\/span> <\/span>olvidar su nombre y los rostros de sus amigos ya que demostrar afecto o reconocer a alguien<\/span> <\/span>podr\u00eda se\u00f1alarlo a los represores y hasta significar su arresto y muerte. Durante este tiempo<\/span> <\/span>hacer arte, poes\u00eda o cantar canciones era un acto subversivo, pero Roberto igual se uni\u00f3 a los<\/span> <\/span>movimientos culturales de protesta. Como m\u00fasico particip\u00f3 con el grupo \u201cSchwenke y Nilo\u201d<\/span> <\/span>banda que tuvo mucha relevancia en el movimiento de la nueva canci\u00f3n chilena. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Tambi\u00e9n es pintor y realiz\u00f3 numerosas exposiciones y acciones de arte en Chile, Ecuador, Inglaterra, Croacia, Alemania y los Estados Unidos. Su extenso trabajo se enfoca en el tema de los derechos humanos colecciones, Amor Contra el Olvido, re\u00fane muchas de estas piezas. Como ser humano, Roberto se ha pasado la gran parte de su vida desde que tenia 13 a\u00f1os trabajando por la defensa de los derechos humanos como activista e investigador. Esto incluy\u00f3 la b\u00fasqueda del paradero de cientos de detenidos desaparecidos. Particip\u00f3 como consultor con un equipo de antrop\u00f3logos forenses en 5 exhumaciones de los restos de gente masacrada durante la dictadura.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Selene y Roberto se conocieron en Chile en 1997, mientras ella visitaba a su familia. Vieron su propio rostro reflejado en el otro y juntaron sus caminos. Roberto sali\u00f3 de Chile y vino a Estados Unidos siguiendo su coraz\u00f3n. Al inicio vivieron en Salinas, California, donde Selene trabajaba con agricultores inmigrantes de diferentes pueblos de M\u00e9xico, primero en un proyecto de agricultura org\u00e1nica y luego en un estudio de salud. En 2003 Selene y Roberto se mudaron a Eugene para que Roberto cursara un programa de estudios de postgrado en la Universidad de Oreg\u00f3n en el programa de Lenguas Romances. A partir de esta escritura, Roberto es un candidato al Doctorado y un Graduate Teaching Fellow que ense\u00f1a literatura y lengua espa\u00f1ola. Selene encontr\u00f3 trabajo en Lane County y ah\u00ed trabaja en el departamento de salud p\u00fablica. Selene y Roberto tienen hijos y una nieta en Chile, y en Eugene comparten su casa con su hijo canino de cuatro patas, el mimado Nico.
