{"id":10716,"date":"2019-12-18T10:00:43","date_gmt":"2019-12-18T18:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/?p=10716"},"modified":"2021-09-22T11:15:31","modified_gmt":"2021-09-22T18:15:31","slug":"oregon-senate-confirms-gerardo-francisco-sandoval-as-land-conservation-and-development-commissioner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/oregon-senate-confirms-gerardo-francisco-sandoval-as-land-conservation-and-development-commissioner\/","title":{"rendered":"Oregon Senate Confirms Gerardo Francisco Sandoval as Land Conservation and Development Commissioner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Editor\u2019s Note: Gerardo Sandoval served previously as a co-director of CLLAS.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>December 6, 2019<\/em>\u2014From <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Around the O (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/design.uoregon.edu\/oregon-senate-confirms-gerardo-sandoval-land-conservation-and-development-commissioner\" target=\"_blank\">Around the O<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On December 2, the Oregon Senate confirmed Professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pppm.uoregon.edu\/pppm\/gerardo-sandoval\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Gerardo Sandoval<\/a>&nbsp;as a commissioner on the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/lcd\/Commission\/Pages\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Land Conservation and Development Commission<\/a>&nbsp;(LCDC). During his term, which began December 1, 2019, and ends November 30, 2023, Sandoval will represent the Willamette Valley region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is tremendous for [the State of] Oregon,\u201d said Director Jim Rue in the committee\u2019s press release. \u201cDr. Sandoval\u2019s research, experience, and perspective will help ensure our work benefits all Oregonians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commission, assisting the Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD), adopts state land-use goals and implements rules, assures local plan compliance with the&nbsp;19 statewide planning goals, coordinates state and local planning, and manages the&nbsp;coastal zone program. The commission is also tasked with implementing rules on issues as wide-ranging as wildfire planning and urban growth boundaries to re-zoning for&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/design.uoregon.edu\/college-design-faculty-tackle-affordable-housing-crisis-oregon\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cmissing middle\u201d housing<\/a>&nbsp;and the push to allow breweries on hops farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sandoval is an associate professor in the School of Planning, Public Policy and Management (PPPM) at the University of Oregon. His work and research focus on the intersection of planning, immigration, and community change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to now serving as a LCDC commissioner, Sandoval is currently serving a four-year appointment as a councilmember on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/ohcs\/OSHC\/Pages\/index.aspx\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">State\u2019s Housing Stability Council<\/a>&nbsp;(HSC).&nbsp;The HSC leads the work of the OregonHousing and Community Services (OHCS)&nbsp;department to meet the housing and services needs of low- and moderate-income Oregonians. The Housing Stability Council works to establish and support OHCS\u2019 strategic direction, foster constructive partnerships across the state, set policy and issue funding decisions, and overall lend their unique expertise to the policy and program development of the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is an honor to serve the state of Oregon in this capacity,\u201d said Sandoval. \u201cPublic service is at the core of the UO\u2019s ethos.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sandoval\u2019s expertise has been recognized through numerous awards and honors, including the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award from the UO for promoting diversity, social justice, and equity.
