{"id":10469,"date":"2019-10-09T05:02:29","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T12:02:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/?p=10469"},"modified":"2019-10-09T10:03:11","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T17:03:11","slug":"aaup-signs-amicus-brief-submitted-to-the-supreme-court-in-support-of-daca-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cllas.uoregon.edu\/aaup-signs-amicus-brief-submitted-to-the-supreme-court-in-support-of-daca-program\/","title":{"rendered":"AAUP signs amicus brief submitted to the Supreme Court in support of DACA program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cLast week, the AAUP, together with forty-three educational associations, signed onto an amicus brief submitted to the Supreme Court in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, whose participants are often referred to as \u201cDreamers.\u201d The brief calls the DACA program \u201can unmitigated good for this country, its higher education system, and the young persons whom it has benefited.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe brief was prepared by the American Council on Education and submitted to the high court in the consolidated DACA cases&nbsp;<em>Dep&#8217;t of Homeland Sec. v. Regents of Univ. of Cal.et.al.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe amicus brief emphasizes that \u201cDACA has been a symbol of tolerance and openness of our university campuses\u201d and warns that rescinding DACA would broadcast to foreign-born students and potential students from around the globe a message of exclusion that would \u201cirreparably damage the reputation of America\u2019s higher education system in the eyes of the world.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral argument in this case in November and a decision is expected before June 2020. The Trump administration moved to end DACA in 2017, but federal courts blocked that attempt. At that time, the AAUP issued a strong&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/u1584542.ct.sendgrid.net\/mps2\/c\/2gA\/ni0YAA\/t.2vp\/RLmcdjceSx26hERVmItlhg\/h1\/QvwHNgFZGntN06d6g9Zg8YFlkb6qGZ-2BPT7aJXoHpOfwFXvruRAtNYS70XAo5JfJ08EYwDR5PwlmO80bJkMqsxbw5Z2O8LzxpzDHVZr6ZT9gBIp13x-2FTCtfIl0KhA4n9pOQhDGO5NUqS75UUJoYMstlzGMjKczLIeed1n9BOa10Lb7bMw4AuFB2PQA-2BAgumAmW3KBunVgmT9gGS8e8lyONzleu-2BkOa3TB35rTXe3OOR1AlY0dOuoAxQynCdlW0NRxixc0Ze61-2BPWf8jUVqlvPC2sD7db2EkB4ueH2D5ilsPTe8-2F-2Ff8b-2F8CdRMMDqpv-2Bws6KbEnO7lZHmudz0VnK7kVo4qXsBmb-2BdnodszRPcxNeYufYk4xO7yzDLfjuP9p65Q\/ZVmC__;!5W9E9PnL_ac!TwJ8Y-KBTGii5Jb6keuGvjhqqsVWX-oTwPRblRm8ixitwxIDVCV_tbvv2C_JS_6_$\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;in support of DACA noting that \u201ca large number of those granted DACA status are our students.\u201d Most recently, the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld one of the district court\u2019s
