While many of the presentations focus on music and\/or Puerto Rico, the conclusions are more widely applicable to other forms of popular culture and to Latin America more broadly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Panelists and their talks:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c500 years of African music and culture in Cangrejos\/Santurce, Puerto Rico,\u201d with\u00a0Marisol Berr\u00edos-Miranda, PhD,\u00a0Visiting Scholar, School of Music, University of Washington.\u00a0A talk about salsa music, and the way it constitutes an African musical heritage not just for Puerto Rico but all of Latin America.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u201cSecretos a Voces: Blackness, Class, and the Dominican-Puerto Rican Family,\u201d with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ethnic.uoregon.edu\/profile\/alai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alai Reyes-Santos<\/a>, PhD,\u00a0Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies, University of Oregon.\u00a0This paper will examine cultural production that illustrates how blackness gets mobilized by Puerto Rican communities to both include Dominicans in community formations and exclude from the social imaginary.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u201cLa Bomba Puertorrique\u00f1a y sus Transformaciones a trav\u00e9s del tiempo,\u201d with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pablo.l.rivera.7\" target=\"_blank\">Pablo Luis Rivera<\/a>, PhD,\u00a0Catedr\u00e1tico Auxiliar\u00a0de Humanidades, Universidad de Puerto Rico en Carolina,\u00a0Director, Restauraci\u00f3n Cultural.\u00a0Esta presentaci\u00f3n trabajar\u00e1 el desarrollo de la bomba y como sus elementos han sido variando desde sus comienzos hasta llegar al presente para seguir vigente en el siglo 21. This paper will be presented in Spanish.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPlacing Expectations on Blackness: Conceptualizing the Music of the African Diaspora,\u201d with\u00a0Juan Eduardo Wolf, PhD,\u00a0Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology, University of Oregon.\u00a0In this paper, I juxtapose the history of ethnographic music scholarship and the development of the ideas surrounding the African Diaspora. I consider how these have influenced each other in a way affects the political recognition of Afro-descendant communities, drawing examples from my own
