Lectures, readings and discussions in English. Survey of premodern Japanese literature and culture from 17th through early 20th centuries – early modern period up to World War II. Covers influential works from a variety of genres including fiction, poetry, drama, film, essay, and comics. Works will be considered in their historical and cultural context.
