Lectures, readings and discussions in English. Survey of premodern Japanese literature and culture from 8th through 16th centuries – beginnings through the medieval period. Covers influential works from a variety of genres including myth, legend, fiction, poetry, drama, and personal essay. Works will be considered in their historical and cultural context.
